It's always a pleasure to see former Robert Juniper Award for the Arts recipients making their mark in the creative world, and few stories are more rewarding than watching an emerging artist develop into an accomplished professional.

Back in 2000, Josh Hogan was a joint recipient of the Robert Juniper Award for the Arts, a scholarship established to support young creative talent and help them take the next steps in their artistic careers.

Fast forward 26 years and Josh has become an accomplished composer, music producer and sound designer, with an impressive body of work spanning television, film, documentaries, games and other media.

A career built around sound and storytelling.

Based in Fremantle, Josh works alongside fellow composer and sound designer Ned Beckley as part of Envelope Audio, a creative studio specialising in original music composition and sound design for film, television, games and live events.

The pair have developed a strong reputation for creating distinctive soundtracks that bring stories to life, with credits including the feature film Below, starring Anthony LaPaglia, Netflix productions Our Law and White Rabbit Project, and the documentary Folau.

Their work has also featured in the Disney+ series Shipwreck Hunters Australia and the animated television series 100% Wolf.

One particularly notable collaboration was the ABC children's television series Thalu, for which Josh and Ned received the 2020 APRA Screen Music Award for Best Music for Children's Television. The series, filmed in the Pilbara, followed a group of Indigenous children on a mission to save their country. The composers developed a distinctive musical sound drawing on percussion, electronic elements and the character of the region.

Four awards and another outstanding achievement

Josh's latest success came at the 2026 Screen Music Awards, where he and Ned Beckley were among the night's biggest winners.

Their work on the ABC animated series Tales from Outer Suburbia, based on the book by acclaimed Australian author and illustrator Shaun Tan, took home an extraordinary four awards.

The pair won:

  • Best Music for Children's Programming

  • Best Opening Title Television Theme

  • Best Soundtrack Album

They also shared Best Original Song Composed for the Screen with fellow composer, and Josh’s sister, Joni Hogan for Nothing Stays the Same, featured in the series.

It was a clean sweep for Josh and Ned, winning all four categories in which they were nominated. A terrific achievement!

A passion for music and education

Josh's talents extend beyond composition and production. He has also worked as an educator, including as a Lecturer in Sound and Music Production at the University of Western Australia, sharing his knowledge and experience with the next generation of music makers.

He is also an Ableton Certified Trainer, reflecting his expertise in music production and digital audio technology.

His creative journey has included a diverse range of musical projects and collaborations, including his work with percussion ensembles and world music projects, as well as his earlier involvement in the American indie-pop band The Mowgli's.

A wonderful example of what a scholarship can help achieve

Josh's journey from joint scholarship recipient in 2000 to an award-winning composer working across Australia's education sector and screen industry is a wonderful example of the possibilities that can unfold when emerging talent is given encouragement and support.

We congratulate Josh on his remarkable achievements and his latest success at the 2026 Screen Music Awards. It's particularly rewarding to see one of our former scholarship recipients continuing to thrive in the creative industries, and we look forward to seeing where his musical journey takes him next.
