The Western Australian artistic community lost one of its stalwarts with the death recently of internationally-renowned photographer, Richard Woldendorp. He was 96 years old.

After migrating to WA from Holland in the 1950s, Richard established a tremendous reputation as a photographer of the Australian landscape, especially from the air. His contribution to the Australian cultural scene was recognised by numerous awards during his life, culminating in his Order of Australia in 2012 “For service to the arts as an Australian landscape photographer”.

In that same year, Richard accepted the invitation to succeed his friend and colleague in the Mundaring artistic community, the late Bob Juniper, as the Patron of the Mundaring Bicentennial Scholarship Trust, of which he and his wife Lyn had for many years been keen Friends.

Ill health required Richard to relinquish this position in 2022, but he remained Emeritus Patron of the Trust.

Richard’s standing in the world of art, especially photography, in this State and Australia-wide will live on through the several wonderful books of his photographs that can still be purchased and enjoyed. The Trust will always be grateful for the support of Richard. He was a part of our history too.

RJAFTA Chair Michael Ryan, Secretary Chris Durrant, and all the Trustees extend their heartfelt sympathy to Richard’s wife Lyn and his family. He will long be remembered for his contribution not only to our Award, but for his extensive contribution and participation in the Western Australian arts.
