Talent Thrives in School Environment! - Eastern Hills Senior Concert Band Kicking the evening off with a high, The Eastern Hills Senior Concert Band, conducted by Music Director Maurice Bourgault, began with an impactful rendition and arrangement by contemporary American composer James Swearingen. The Concert Band’s performance of “Celebrations and Tribute” highlighted the assured and competent playing of the musicians. The band then delivered Canadian composer Kenley Kristofferson’s composition “Matters of Kindness”, full of sumptuous textures that enabled all the musicians to participate in creating a beautiful and poignant reflection of a young life that ended too soon. Moving onto more contemporary compositions and arrangement, the Band finished their strong performance with a medley of the most popular songs from the Australian band INXS, much to the delight of all the audience. Lavater-Williams played this technically challenging piece with confidence, and the audience loved it! Accompanied by a very accomplished 12 piece big band, with a large brass section, the six talented singers confidently belted out hits “I’m Still Standing” (Elton John), “I Will Survive” (Gloria Gaynor), Perth’s own Baby Animals “One Word”, Nancy Sinatra’s “These Boots are Made for Walking”, the iconic “Nutbush City Limits” (Tina Turner), Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk”, and Stevie Wonders funk-anthem “Higher Ground”. Two teeny humans were dancing in the stalls, and the Boodjar Bidi Girls Dance Troupe could be seen dancing to the left of stage. Written in 2010, Rybak plays violin and wrote the piece for voice and strings, which perfectly suited the Strings Ensemble. The Ensemble proficiently delivered this upbeat and rhythmic arrangement, with several audience members tapping along to the beat. Next, the Ensemble expertly played the soaringly gorgeous “Moonstone”, written by contemporary Japanese pianist and composer Yukiko Nishimura. They finished their performance with another contemporary pop piece “A Thousand Years” (2011) by Christina Perri. Strings suit this beautiful love song about eternal love perfectly, and the Helena College Strings Ensemble delivered a seemingly effortless and flawless performance that kept the audience engaged for the entirety of the performance. Said to be one of Beethoven’s more approachable sonatas, with dynamic contrasts and rhetorical silences, Sonata #5 in C Minor, Op.10 was expertly played by Year 12 ATAR music student Ben Foster. Foster executed this lyrical and nostalgic piece with delicate confidence and impeccable timing, displaying great musical maturity. Most often played with cello and piano, and a popular opera piece, Duncan adapted it to violin. The audience swooned to Duncan’s elegantly fragile and haunting violin sound accompanied by Browne’s melodic and relentlessly-driving piano underpinning the whole piece - the beauty of the two instruments complementing each other perfectly. As with Howarth’s performance, the audience were captivated by the nocturnal sounding transitions and were hushed momentarily, before bursting into appreciative applause. With some of the guitarists expertly playing the melody, and others the rhythm and chords, the rhythm guitarists also played golpe hits over the front of the guitar. The audience loved it! Next the Ensemble kept the pace with English composer Karl Jenkins “Palladio”, written in 1995 for string orchestra and performed by the Ensemble with assured confidence. Next, a journey into the sea with Australian guitarist and composer Richard Charlton’s harmonic “Voyage of the Green Sea Turtle” (2012), with Arceo and students weaving a rich tapestry of rhythm, melody, and choral structure. Glen spent 20 years as a Lecturer/Researcher creating aquatic science programmes and conducting research at Perth’s Curtin University. He was the inaugural Head of the Department of Applied Biosciences at Curtin and Founding President of the Silver Perch Association of WA. Having served on the Executive Committee of the Marron Growers Association of WA for 10 years he became President of the International Association of Astacology in 2000 — being awarded Honorary Life Membership in 2004 for contributions to crayfish science. Glen left the academic world in 2012 to pursue his passions for underwater photography, music and art (Glen has played with renowned musician Dave Hole for several years). He now conducts research privately in marine monitoring and has produced two fish identification books with his colleague Alexandra Hoschke through their company Aqua Research & Monitoring Services. As a local musician, artist, and writer Glen says the Robert Juniper Award for the Arts has been on his radar for some time, and he ignited his focus after his daughter Haylee became the scholarship recipient in 2021. Sensing his piqued interest, the Board did not hesitate to invite Glen to be a Trustee. “I was delighted to accept an invitation onto the Robert Juniper Award for the Arts Trust. I knew Bob personally (many people are not aware of his secret passion for fishing) and joining the Trust reignites that connection for me. The local arts scene (music/art/theatre) has been at the centre of my community involvement for many years, and I feel that RJAFTA aligns perfectly with my long-held desire to support young local creatives.” We look forward to collaborating with Glen and feel certain his many abilities will be an asset to the Board of Trustees. I love all things creative. Constructing beautiful and thought-provoking works is the driving force of my life.” In 2018 Owen completed the first year of a Bachelor of Jazz at WAAPA. He was a member of the Kalamunda Youth Swing Band for six years, and in the Western Australian Youth Jazz Orchestra for two years. Owen remains passionate about music, and continues to actively participate in the Perth music scene. Having discovered photography in high school, Owen has done shoots and video work for live music events, portraiture, lifestyle, and fundraisers (such as the Path of Hope Gala 2021). Owen is presently completing an Advanced Diploma of Photography at North Metropolitan TAFE (due to graduate in December this year). Owen’s proposed project for the RJAFTA 2021 is to produce a fine art abstract landscape photography book and exhibition, entitled The Emotive Landscape. Since 2017 Day has been dedicated to developing his song writing abilities, and honing his production skills (recording, mixing and mastering). Day explains “I am a songwriter, vocalist, guitarist, and performing/recording artist with a 4 piece band. I create music on the guitar in the alternative Folk genre, inspired by questions about the world, it’s beauty, and my own struggles. I see every move I make as a musician a part of a long term plan to build a catalogue of music of a high quality” s. To realise this ambition involves networking, syncing licensing deals for movies and television, publishing songs, and releasing high production music regularly. Day’s song Storm was recently nominated for the West Australian Music Awards and Day and his band performed it live on The Scene (listen HERE). With 7 singles having been released since May 2020 (available on Spotify, Apple Music, YouTube and other streaming channels) Day’s music has ben played on Triple J, RTR, Adrian’s Attic, Radio Adelaide, The Big Aussie Breakfast and more. Tim van der Kuil 1988 Winner Thirty seven years ago, the Mundaring Arts Scholarship Trust awarded young guitarist Tim Van Der Kuil of Darlington a scholarship to help him launch a career in the super-competitive world of music. Two decades on, and now based in London, Tim is playing guitar for Adele, the Grammy award-winning British singer who, with album sales of more than 10 million, is currently the world’s highest selling artist in her field. Over the past 20 years, Tim has performed or recorded with such big names as Robbie Williams, The Script, Daniel Merriweather, Jason Mraz, Taylor Swift, Moby, Ray Davies, Sugababes, Delta Goodrem, and Tina Turner. A singer and multi-instrumentalist, Bulla received his award from RJAFTA Patron Trish Juniper at the annual RJAFTA Award Soiree on 9 December, which was held at Juniper Galleries for the first time. Bulla was a finalist in the 2021 awards and says of the experience “It was great to be a finalist, but I realised pretty quickly that I had not addressed all the criteria in the application, and I was determined to make sure that this year I did. I phoned a couple of the Trustees for advice and bounced ideas off them before starting my application. After doing the application, I wasn’t sure that I had done it quite right and the Trustees were happy to point out what was missing and help me focus my project. Once I had hit that submit button online, I felt confident that I had covered all my bases! My advice to prospective applicants is to contact the Trustees for help with your application before you submit it.” Born in Alice Springs Bulla’s family moved to Mount Helena when he was 8 years old. Bulla’s father Steve played guitar and Ben recalls his father teaching him some basic chords when he was around seven years old. “Dad wasn’t a virtuoso, but he knew a few chords and enjoyed playing for us at home. One of the earliest songs I remember him teaching me was ‘Hey Joe’.” At aged 10 Bulla had guitar lessons with a teacher at the Mundaring Music Shop. He continued his music education at Eastern Hills Senior High School, playing Tuba under the tutelage of Steve Searle. “I really liked playing the Tuba, but it didn’t have the connection with the audience that I wanted. Mr Searle was a brilliant teacher, and introduced me to playing Jazz.” Bulla really enjoyed the music programme offered at EHSHS, under Music Director Maurice Borgault. “Mr Borgault was just so passionate about music. He taught us the value of learning theory, but he also instilled in me the joy of playing music, and the importance of Voice Leading - the art of combining vocal or instrumental progressions over time to create harmony. Learning this was exciting to me.” Although Bulla was playing Tuba in the EHSHS Concert Band, he had not put his guitar away. He took up the guitar again in year 12, having lessons privately with renowned Perth Hills guitar teacher Fenton Oldmeadow. He passed his Year 12 ATAR exam in guitar, and also the AMEB exam (Australian Music Examination Board). Bulla cites Perth Hills folk musician Kevin McKenna as being one of the most significant influences for him. “I met Kev when I was 15 years old. Kevin runs the Mundaring Folk and Blues Club, which has been going for about 35 years. Honestly, I would have to say that Kev was really my first real influence in focussing where I wanted to go with my music. He was the first musician to really just sit with me and work songs out with. He taught me about repertoire, delivering a performance, and how to engage with an audience.” Bulla is on the committee of the MFBC, and helps set up the stage prior to performances. “I still go every month to the Club, and I have seen so many brilliant performances there.” After graduating from high school Bulla applied for and was accepted to study the Contemporary Music Artist course at WAAPA under Vinnie Crea, and graduated 2 years later with an Advanced Diploma of the Music Industry. Bulla recalls enjoying some amazing performances at WAAPA, especially the Songbook Sessions and also playing the ECU Chancellor’s Farewell Banquet. “I met some great people at WAAPA, super creative and talented people that I had the privilege to play with. It was a great time, and I learnt so much there. I still play with some of the people I studied at WAAPA with.” Bulla has a diverse appreciation for many different styles of music. “Growing up a friend introduced me to Metallica and I was like ‘Wow!’. I was amazed at the technical skill of the guitar music, and for a while played this style of music with friends.” Bulla’s Latin influences came when playing with a friend, American actor and percussion player Scott Brantley, who he met prior to starting at WAAPA. “Scott taught me the power of percussion! I never realised how powerful or awe inspiring that could be, and how percussion can move an audience. He introduced me to Jazz and Latin styles I had not heard of before, and he was certainly a big inspiration for me”. Bulla played with Brantley in Latin-groove band Rubaclava, which was started by friend and drummer Will Chiew. “That was so much fun. Sometimes there would be just a few of us on stage, sometimes a heap. It was great playing with such talented people and playing with a horn section was really cool.” Bulla’s successful RJAFTA scholarship application will enable him to attend an intensive workshop at the Brazilian Guitar Academy in Sao Paulo, Brazil, in 2023. The workshop is presented by Master Guitarists such as Everton Gloeden, Camilo Carrara and Gilson Antunes and explores and teaches about the history, techniques, practices and repertoire of Brazilian classical guitar, as well as Brazilian improvisation, Brazilian rhythms, and song accompaniment. “I am really excited about this. I am always on a musical drive, searching for the next step in the journey of understanding music theory. Great musicians like Antonio Carlos Jobim showed how to merge jazz and the bossa nova and come up with this exciting new music. The Brazilian take on approaching chords is fascinating – all the crazy chords that I never knew how to approach before, but I am now playing, and exploring. I want to immerse myself in the culture of that music, refine my learning, get down to the nitty gritty, the nuts and bolts of playing that style of music, and how that can crossover to the many different styles of music that I play already. Many fine guitar players have come out of Brazil and because of that, I want to learn from Masters of their craft.” When Bulla returns from Brazil, he will spend time developing a repertoire and rehearsing with other musicians to present three evening Brazilian Music Soiree performances in late 2023 at Juniper Galleries in the Perth Hills. Bulla is no stranger to Juniper Galleries, being a regular player at the Juniper Galleries Twilight Series which runs from late Spring to late Autumn. “Being awarded this scholarship is huge for me. The things I learn from this unique course will not only benefit my skills in playing Brazilian music and repertoire on guitar, but will also be relevant to all genres of guitar music that I play. I am hoping it will unlock hidden parts of the guitar to me, and the mysteries of musical harmony and melody. Every song I learn from that point on will be viewed from a more enlightened musical perspective and potentially help me play more efficiently and achieve a higher standard of performance. It means that I can bring back what I have learnt at the Brazilian Guitar Academy, share the knowledge, share the playing, and enjoy playing it to an audience. At the invitation of American Grammy-nominated producer/ songwriter John Feldmann, the group made two trips to Los Angeles, where they worked with Feldmann, writing and recording songs for an album they expect to release this year. Michael (21), learnt to play the guitar at St Anthony’s Primary School in Greenmount, where he developed a love for music, formed his first band and presented his first show. He continued studying music at La Salle College, and subsequently at WAAPA. In 2014 he formed a band with fellow musicians Josh Raven and Stephen Beerkens, and in 2015, when they realised they were on to something good, they invited drummer Sean Tighe to round out their pop punk sound. Their first EP Get Up Get Out made No. 3 on the iTunes rock chart, notched up 340,000 plays on music streaming sites, and featured in music magazine Alternative Press as an up-and-coming band. They perform regularly at music festivals and local venues in and around Perth. It was after Michael posted a video of the band on YouTube that that he was contacted by the well-connected LA producer/ songwriter. The result was two working visits to John Feldmann’s Foxy Studios in April and August last year. For Michael, these sessions were the first steps towards building a global profile for himself and the band. ‘Our goal is to show that anyone, not only from Perth, but from the Shire of Mundaring, can take their music to the world.’ His award will help meet expenses when The Faim supports the US band Sleeping with Sirens during their Australian tour this year. The judges noted that Cara's arts practice is unique, varied and joyful; simplistic but considered, and that her contribution to the arts fitted into the commercial culture of art in today's world. Cara is the first artist living with disability to win the Award in its 33-year history. The Award may assist Cara to establish a profile as an emerging artist, and allow her to establish a career in visual arts. The Award may provide Cara with the opportunity to diversify her product range, offering homewares to high fashion and eventually open up new markets for her. With the funds granted through this Award, Cara is planning to develop a range of fashion items that will be showcased later in 2021. Cara enjoys designing, and her designs reflect her passion for animals and conversation. Her mother Delia shares these values, and is Delia’s strongest supporter, along with her grandmother and grandfather. Delia explained “Special needs people often get a lot of exclusion and are not included in things. This award helps to break that cycle.” Last year Cara spent some time with judge Val Shiell, and Echo Journalist Claire Ottaviano. In 1968, her grandparents travelled by boat with her four-year-old father as ‘ten-pound poms’ to Western Australia, settling in Mundaring and building a family home where her father grew up. In 2013 her father returned to live in Darlington. The time spent at her father’s home has evolved along with Olive‘s photographic practice. In 2018, her honours work investigated notions of family within a contemporary Australian milieu. Employing photography as a vehicle to re-visualise ‘family’ beyond the bounds of mainstream imagination, Olive looked introspectively at her own unconventional family model. This process included rifling through collective family archives which captured moments of her family’s life in Mundaring. Integrating these found family archives with intimate portraits, Olive developed a series of images that critique the mainstream idea of family while simultaneously reflecting her own experiences and connections. “ I am connected to Mundaring via deep filial ties, where place nurtures a sense of belonging and identity.” Olive Lipscombe With the help of this Award, these images formed Olive’s first solo exhibition Au nom de la mère, which took place at the Perth Centre for Photography in late January this year. Au nom de la mère is a photographic auto-ethnography that re/presents the mother subject and the mother/daughter bond within a cultural milieu where the maternal experience is both ignored and feared. The photographs capture intimate and powerful moments of a personal relationship exposing the complex dichotomies and multilayered identities inherent in the mother daughter experience. Drawing on my own understanding of the maternal as a daughter, I use photography as a tool to explore the paradoxically intimate and detached nuances of the maternal experience –pain, loss, love and desire – I visit this experience with a feminist theoretical lens that traverses and transgresses traditional representations of motherhood found in art history and reinforced through contemporary images of the Western nuclear family. Au nom de la mère (In the name of the Mother) refers to my mother’s French heritage and maiden name du Bignon. This project facilitates an intimate reconnection with the mother which supports the process of legally changing my last name from the paternal to the maternal. The act of photography as a creative practice may allow for reconnection with the maternal and du Bignon name. The body of work of approximately 30 photographs will be published in a small photobook and shown in an exhibition. Visit Olive’s WEBSITE. https://www.robertjuniperawardforthearts.org/composer-musician-nate-wood daily 0.75 2025-10-28 https://images.squarespace-cdn.com/content/v1/5efea75085a44321fb12228c/69ef88c4-abec-4aff-a4af-51ccd2dc305f/tumblr_pf8urmAz1Q1vck63ho1_540.png Nathaniel Wood 2018 Recipient - Nathaniel Wood 2018 Musician/Composer | Awarded $9,000 Growing up on the edge of Greenmount National Park has inspired many of the compositions of young Darlington musician Nathaniel (Nate) Wood, 2018 winner of the Robert Juniper Award for the Arts. “Walking and riding through the bush gave me a love of nature and the Perth hills’ wildlife and flora,” says Nate. “A lot of the music I write is inspired by the places in which I grew up, the sounds I heard, and the things I found there.” Winning the prestigious $9,000 award means that this year Nate can begin writing, recording and producing an album of his own music; it also gives him an opportunity to travel to Germany next year to attend the renowned Darmstadt Summer Music Course, a contemporary music program of lectures, workshops and a host of concerts. 2019 is already proving a busy year for Nate. As well as completing his BA in specialist music studies at the University of Western Australia (UWA), he is one of four students selected to attend the Western Australian Symphony Orchestra’s (WASO) 2019 Composition Course. During the next four months, the students will work together composing a new work to be performed by a chamber ensemble before a live audience. The students will be mentored by Artistic Director James Ledger and WASO musicians. Music runs in Nate’s family. He considers himself fortunate to have been tutored by his grandfather Graham Wood, the celebrated violinist. “My grandfather performed with the London Philharmonic Orchestra as well as the WASO on many occasions,” says Nate. “He taught me violin from age nine until I went to UWA. And my dad played the trumpet with a number of bands.” He considers himself ‘doubly lucky’ to have attended Helena College, where he received a broad musical education. Alongside his studying and composing, Nate gives violin lessons: “Violin is the instrument I have most experience in.” While he enjoys playing and performing, he is especially attracted to composing contemporary and experimental music. “I have been writing music for a long time – I think if I abandoned it, I would never feel satisfied. The Award, presented annually by the Mundaring Bicentennial Scholarship Trust, will enable this young musician to bring an ambitious project to life at the Mundaring Arts Centre from the beginning of July this year. Studying for a Bachelor of Music at WAAPA, Moses’ diversity shows itself in her many genres of composition; folk, indie, ballad, soul. Recently finding an interest in spatial music; a genre that pre-dates digital and which works by projecting sound through more than one source. After witnessing a presentation by experimental music composer Aviva Endean, Moses was inspired to present music accessibly through a sound installation and developed the project proposal that won her the latest award. Moses described spatial sound as music presented in a way not unlike a surround sound system and equally possible through live presentation by positioning musicians in different areas of a room. “I want to try something I haven’t done before: using a space as the main prompt for the music.” she said. She approached visual artist Shannon Lyons, who became her partner in the project which is titled “Five Point One and a Piece of Four by Two”. Moses said the idea is to build a space – a sound scape – the audience can walk through and experience the transparency of art, almost subliminally. The working title focuses on the ‘tools’ used by the two artists to create and present art, with Moses gathering sounds for the installation with a portable recorder and Lyons creating the ‘scape’. In the meantime, the young musician has managed, produced and performed the equally ambitious Fringe World production ‘The Butterfly Ball and the Grasshopper’s Feast’ – a music-poetry performance of the 1975 studio album, inspired by the illustrated children’s book of the same name. Growing up in Gidgegannup, where she lived until recently, the Hills talent attended the local primary school and then Helena College in Glen Forrest. Music is clearly in her genes – her father sings and plays guitar – and at the tender age of six Moses started piano lessons. By nine she was writing her own songs, and recalls her teacher, Heather Luke, helping her score the music and write lyrics for a song about zebras. “By the end of primary school I was composing contemporary folk songs, performing my own music and making some recordings,” she said. “I also took up the guitar and mandolin.” Her musicality flourished at high school and studying music at University, she said, had opened her mind to many new ideas. In her first year at WAAPA, encouraged to write a music score, Moses collected a $500 excellence award for music composition from a TV company. She believes a willingness to embrace new music styles has added to her versatility as a musician and complemented an early love of writing and performing folk songs. Moses performs locally, pitching her music to a broader audience and discovering a new world of sound, one that is bringing her recognition and reward. He had found his ‘calling’ and graduated in 2012. Flanagan gained experience designing, prototyping and developing hospital equipment products for production, acoustic modules for theatres, materials handling equipment and occasional teaching at Central Institute of Technology. Informing Jack’s work is the exploration of the concepts of attachment and permanence and the relationships that families and individuals forge with treasured objects that become the recorder and keeper of shared stories. Jack embraces ancient and traditional techniques, like sand casting and turning, and materials like bronze, aluminium, timbers and the creation of unique colours and wood stains, paired with the latest manufacturing technology and materials for industrial scale. His work is consistently selected by curators for exhibition around Australia and has been selected for exhibit at the London Design Festival on three separate occasions. The Award Recipient for 2021 is Darlington actor/writer/director/producer/artist Haylee Whisson. Haylee received her award at the annual RJAFTA Award Soiree on 10 December, at the Mundaring Arts Centre. After receiving her $10,000 scholarship award cheque from Trust Patron Richard Woldendorp, Whisson explained to Friends of the Trust and invited guests, including Shire of Mundaring Councillors, how her work has evolved in the past few years. Whisson described how she would use the scholarship funds to extend and develop her craft by creating a one woman play that she intends to stage at the Perth Fringe Festival in 2023 (more details below). Whisson said she was aware the Shire of Mundaring were no longer in a position to fund the scholarship, but she expressed her thanks in the Shire’s outstanding long-running support of the Award over the past years. Whisson also acknowledged the other finalists and felt privileged to be considered among peers whose work she admired and respected. A former Duke of Edinburgh award recipient, and a graduate from the United World College program (India), Haylee Whisson completed a Bachelor of Performing Arts at WAAPA in 2019. Whisson followed this by undertaking a Graduate Certificate of Digital Marketing at Curtin University, which she is presently still studying. Whisson explains “I am a writer, actor and emerging theatre maker from the Perth Hills who is fascinated with creating original, inventive theatre that pushes the possibilities of form and what can happen when different artistic disciplines collide onstage to tell insightful, relevant stories. I have skills in producing works from their conceptualization to completion; collaborating with a wide-range of creatives and technicians to facilitate the merging of disciplines and ideas.” Whisson has written, performed and produced several plays since 2015, and collaborated as either a performer or writer (or both) on many more. She has studied play-writing, directing, acting, and has worked both on stage and off-stage on many projects. This year saw Whisson as writer/devisor/performer for the production Hair at the State Theatre Centre of Western Australia. At aged 19, Whisson founded Onset Theatre Company to create a show for the 2017 Perth Fringeworld Season. She wrote and produced Onset, which explored themes of mental health in adolescence. Today Whisson’s company produces shows for Perth stages. In 2020 Whisson co-founded theatre company Lady Business Productions , an unapologetic female-focused theatre company. “I am drawn to work that responds to repercussions that socio-political events have on our mental health. I strive to make work that responds to current themes and issues with a sarcastic sense of Australian humour, authenticity and a lot of heart” says Whisson. “I want to put stories on stage that are the catalyst for important conversations about the world we live in; stories that make people laugh, then make them think. I seek to create the kind of theatre that has the power to cultivate a sense of community, to open hearts and to spark minds.” Whisson is currently Artist in Residence at Midland Junction Arts Centre. Whisson’s proposed project for RJAFTA is to develop a play titled Menswear, which she will write, workshop, and stage at the 2023 Fringe World Festival in Perth. The project is in response to a combination of workplace harassment Whisson witnessed whilst working in a menswear store, as well as being constantly surprised and often moved by the stories she encountered as to why a customer needed to buy their suit. Jett’s musical versatility, steadfast commitment to artistic expression, and the thorough and thoughtful approach outlined in his project proposal impressed all the adjudicators. While not mandatory according to the award criteria, the judges believed that Bieundurry’s project had the potential to not only improve his personal skills but also create a ripple effect by enriching his community. They unanimously selected him after an intense evaluation of an exceptional lineup of finalists. Growing up in the Perth Hills, the former Helena College student’s journey into he world of music commenced in his early years, nurtured by his mother Donna and father Clifton, a seasoned performer on international stages. Bieundurry’s passion for music ignited during his primary school years, with him much preferring to create music rather than doing his homework! A testament to his dedication to creating music is in his strict daily regime, which started around the age of 12 - rising early each morning to lay down beats and pen some lyrics before heading to school, returning to his creative pursuits after school was finished. Bieundurry’s early dedication has seemingly set the stage for a lifelong journey in music, one that he is keen to embrace. Despite being only 18 years old, Bieundurry has a discography that spans multiple bodies of work, including a featured EP on prominent Spotify playlists in 2023. His 2021 album “Beauty Among the Chaos” not only resonated with audiences but also earned the prestigious honour of gracing the cover of Apple Music HipHop. The accolades continued as Jett/Kayps secured the Indigenous Initiative Award from the Triple J Unearthed competition in 2021. A finalist in the same competition that year, he maintained momentum by securing a spot in the national competition in 2022. In 2022 Kayps took to the stage at the Nannup Music Festival, enthralling his audience. In 2023 Bieundurry embarked on the Mushroom Records First Nations Pathway writers programme in Melbourne, showcasing not only his musical capabilities but also his commitment to nurturing emerging talent. During his school holidays, Bieundurry volunteered to lead a songwriting and music production workshop for Indigenous young men at the Koya Foundation. Beyond his musical achievements, Jett Bieundurry envisions inspiring First Nations youth nationwide and he is dedicated to being an active participant in making this happen. Bieundurry says “My purpose for creating music stems from my passion in wanting to inspire First Nations youth around our country in expressing themselves via the creative arts. In addition to extending my skillset and knowledge in both the creation and the production aspects of music, I also aim to be able to perform my music at festivals and venues across Australia which will help me to create connections in communities and with young people.” Jett’s multifaceted approach extends beyond music, with a commitment to developing skills in video production to complement his music. He knows that dynamic multimedia presentations will enhance his storytelling and help him to reach a wider audience. His award application project centres around collaborating with videographer Joel Baker to create 4 videos of four songs that he aims to release during the summer of 2023-2024.
